The Telangana government has decided to begin a special statewide verification drive to identify and remove ineligible beneficiaries from pension schemes. The exercise will start from May 15 following instructions issued by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

Officials said the government became concerned after discovering that pension amounts were still being withdrawn in the names of deceased beneficiaries. To address the issue, village level meetings will be conducted across the state where local residents and officials will jointly verify beneficiary details.

Authorities have been instructed to complete the entire verification process by June 15 without delays. During the drive, officials will identify the names of deceased persons and remove them from pension records to prevent misuse of government funds.

Preliminary inspections reportedly uncovered several irregularities in pension distribution. According to officials, some financially well off individuals and family members of government employees were also receiving pensions despite not meeting eligibility criteria.

The government believes political influence and local level irregularities allowed some ineligible people to continue receiving benefits while deserving poor families were left out. After removing invalid beneficiaries, the state plans to allocate the available funds to newly eligible applicants waiting for approval.

Apart from removing fake or ineligible names, the government is also working on improving transparency in the pension system through digital reforms. Officials are preparing a permanent mechanism that will regularly update beneficiary information using Aadhaar linkage and death certificate verification.

Experts believe the new system could reduce unnecessary pressure on the state treasury and strengthen public trust in welfare schemes. After June 15, pension distribution across Telangana is expected to continue under a more transparent and digitally monitored system.
