Hyderabad: Vehicle owners in Telangana may soon face serious consequences for ignoring pending traffic challans, as the government prepares to implement stricter rules starting April. Authorities are moving beyond fines and are set to introduce tougher enforcement measures.

Under the proposed system, those who accumulate more than five unpaid challans in a year could see their driving licence and vehicle registration certificate frozen. This step is aimed at ensuring that violators do not continue to ignore penalties.

Officials say that once the licence or RC is frozen, the vehicle cannot be used on roads. If caught driving despite restrictions, the vehicle may be seized. Even keeping the vehicle idle at home may not help, as a 45 day deadline will be given to clear dues before further action is taken.

The move aligns with updated central motor vehicle guidelines, and the state is preparing to enforce them strictly. To address public concerns, a grievance redressal authority will also be set up to handle complaints related to incorrect challans or technical errors.

In cases where challans are issued mistakenly, vehicle owners can approach the authority for resolution. If verified, such challans will be cancelled within a stipulated time frame, offering relief to genuine cases.

The government has repeatedly urged motorists to follow traffic rules, pointing out that negligence often leads to serious accidents. Officials have also discouraged the practice of waiting for discount schemes to clear pending fines.

With the new rules coming into force, drivers are advised to regularly check their challan status online and clear dues promptly. Wearing helmets, following signals, and maintaining road discipline are now more important than ever to avoid penalties and ensure safety.

The upcoming changes send a clear message that traffic violations will no longer be taken lightly, and strict compliance will be the only way forward for motorists in Telangana.
