In a major policy move, the Telangana Government has decided to introduce a special welfare bill for gig workers in the forthcoming Assembly budget session. The proposal aims to address long standing demands of delivery partners cab drivers and other platform based workers across the state.
The planned legislation is expected to extend social security benefits to nearly four lakh gig workers. Officials indicated that insurance cover and pension support will be key components, offering a safety net to workers who currently operate without formal protection.
Beyond welfare schemes, the bill will grant legal recognition to gig and platform workers who have remained part of the unorganised sector. With statutory backing, issues related to wages working hours and grievance redressal are likely to be addressed through an institutional framework.
The move also marks the fulfilment of a key election promise made by the ruling government to protect the rights of gig workers. By formalising this rapidly growing workforce, Telangana aims to set a national benchmark in worker welfare and labour reforms.
If enacted, the bill is expected to curb exploitation by platform operators while bringing stability and dignity to thousands of worker families who depend on gig based livelihoods.
