Auto drivers operating at Yadagirigutta hill may soon lose permission to transport devotees as temple authorities consider cancelling permits over unpaid dues. Officials say a significant amount has remained pending for over a year, prompting strict action.
According to temple records, around Rs 60 lakh in fees has not been cleared by auto operators over the past 14 months. Despite repeated notices, there has been little response, forcing authorities to rethink the continuation of services.
Currently, about 287 autos are allowed to ferry devotees up the hill, with each vehicle required to pay a fixed monthly fee. However, declining income due to free bus services has made it difficult for drivers to meet these payments.
The issue has become more complex as free transport facilities provided by RTC have reduced demand for autos. With fewer passengers, drivers say they are unable to generate enough income to pay the required charges.
Earlier, auto services were restricted due to safety concerns and limited space on the hill. Later, permissions were granted again following demands from workers and assurances from local leadership.
If the dues are not cleared by the end of the month, officials are likely to cancel the permits entirely. This could affect both auto drivers who depend on this livelihood and devotees who rely on these services for travel.
The situation has also raised questions about earlier promises made to auto workers, as many now fear losing their only source of income if the decision is implemented.
