India’s first privately manufactured C 295 military transport aircraft is nearing launch from Vadodara, marking a major boost for domestic defence production and private sector participation.

India’s defence manufacturing sector is witnessing a major transformation as the country prepares to roll out its first privately produced C 295 military transport aircraft. Built at Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s facility in Vadodara, the aircraft represents a significant step in expanding private sector participation in defence production.

For decades, military aircraft manufacturing in India remained largely under the control of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The entry of Tata into this strategic sector is now being seen as a turning point in the push toward self reliance in defence technology and aerospace manufacturing.

Although an official announcement is still awaited, recent visuals of the aircraft being moved out of the hangar have generated widespread attention on social media. Speculation about an early test phase grew stronger after Indian Air Force Deputy Chief Air Marshal A K Bharti visited the Vadodara assembly facility last week to review progress on the project.

The C 295 aircraft is being developed under a Rs 21,935 crore agreement signed in 2021 for the supply of 56 transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force. While 16 aircraft are being imported from Spain in fully built condition, the remaining 40 are being manufactured within India by Tata.

Designed for tactical transport operations, the aircraft can carry up to 70 troops or nearly 9.5 tonnes of cargo. One of its biggest operational advantages is its ability to take off and land in difficult terrain and short airstrips, including remote high altitude areas where regular runways may not exist.

The new fleet is expected to gradually replace the ageing Avro 748 aircraft currently used by the Air Force. Defence experts believe the programme could also create large scale employment opportunities through direct and indirect industrial support.

The aircraft has also drawn international attention due to its operational use in rescue and military support missions. Reports indicate that the United States had previously used the C 295 platform during a mission linked to rescuing a pilot trapped in hostile territory during conflict operations involving Iran.
