Karnataka: Dharwad police have solved the murder of a 21 year old paramedical student whose body was found on the outskirts of the city, revealing that her close friend was behind the crime.

The victim, Zakia, a resident of Gandhi Chowk, had recently completed her paramedical course. On Tuesday evening, she left home saying she was stepping out for work related reasons, but she never returned. Her disappearance raised concern among family members.

The following morning, her body was discovered in an agricultural field near Mansur Road. Dharwad Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya confirmed that the discovery triggered an intensive investigation using technical surveillance and mobile phone tracking.

Police focused on Zakia’s personal circle and found that she had been friends with Sabir Mullani for nearly four years. Investigators said differences had developed between them recently, leading to frequent disagreements.

According to preliminary findings, the two met on the evening of January 20 to discuss their future. During the conversation, an argument reportedly escalated into a violent confrontation. Initial evidence suggests the student was strangled, though police are awaiting the final postmortem report.

In a dramatic twist, the accused himself approached Dharwad Suburban Police Station after the incident, claiming that Zakia was missing and asking officers to trace her. He also contacted senior police officials and remained present at the crime scene, pretending to be unaware of the murder.

However, his behaviour raised suspicion among investigators. After being taken into custody and questioned, Sabir confessed to the crime, bringing clarity to a case that had shocked the city and its residents.
