GHMC Council Term Ends, Hyderabad Civic Body to Be Run by Special Officer

GHMC council tenure ends on February 10 as Telangana government prepares to appoint a special officer while civic administration continues under commissioner ahead of fresh municipal elections expected in months

  • GHMC council term ends and special officer system begins.
  • Municipal elections must be held within six months as per law.
  • GHMC expansion and possible bifurcation remain under review.

The five year term of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation council comes to an end today, marking a transition phase for the civic administration in Hyderabad.

With the council’s tenure completed, the Telangana government will appoint a special officer of secretary rank to oversee the municipal body until fresh elections are conducted. While policy level supervision will shift to the special officer, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan will continue handling routine civic operations to ensure continuity in public services.

As mandated by law, municipal elections are required to be held within six months of the council’s expiry unless delayed by legal or administrative factors. The last GHMC elections took place in 2020, and the next polls are expected in the coming months.

In the meantime, GHMC continues to operate as the country’s largest municipal corporation following its recent expansion. The civic body now has 300 wards after the merger of 27 surrounding urban local bodies, increasing its jurisdiction to over two thousand square kilometres.

There is also ongoing discussion within government circles about a possible restructuring of GHMC into three separate corporations, tentatively proposed as Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. However, officials have clarified that no final decision has been taken on this proposal yet.
