From Sanitation Worker to Councillor, A Journey of Service in Nereducharla

After three decades of grassroots public service as a sanitation worker, a Nereducharla woman wins a close municipal election, turning lived experience into leadership and inspiring everyday citizens to dream bigger.

  • She served as a sanitation worker for three decades.
  • She won the municipal election by a ten vote margin.
  • She now represents the same ward she once served daily.

For thirty years, she worked quietly on the streets she now represents. Before dawn and after dusk, her work helped keep neighbourhoods clean and families healthy. Today, she serves the same community with a new responsibility and a louder voice.

Venkatamma of Nereducharla in Suryapet district spent her working life as a sanitation worker, first under the village panchayat and later in the municipality after it was formed. Her daily routine was guided by municipal instructions and public needs, and her role placed her at the heart of local public health. Even after retiring in December two thousand nineteen, she remained active, supporting residents with the knowledge and relationships built over decades.

That trust turned into votes when municipal election results were declared on February thirteen. Contesting from Ward Ten, Venkatamma secured a narrow victory by ten votes to become a municipal councillor. The result marked a rare and powerful transition, from frontline worker to elected representative within the same local body.

Her rise reflects years of lived service and constant connection with residents. People who once greeted her during sanitation rounds now see her at the council table, carrying their concerns forward with firsthand understanding.

Venkatamma’s story stands as a reminder that leadership can grow from service, and that experience earned on the ground can shape meaningful public representation.
