Food services across Hyderabad are facing an unusual disruption as hotels hostels and mess operators begin limiting their menus due to a gas shortage. The situation has forced several establishments to temporarily stop preparing popular breakfast items such as dosa, puri and vada.

Restaurant associations in the Hyderabad IT corridor announced that they are suspending food items that require large quantities of cooking gas or take longer preparation time. As a result dishes like dosa, puri, vada, chapati, tea and coffee are being reduced or temporarily removed from menus in many outlets.

The shortage of gas supplies has been linked to the ongoing tensions involving Iran Israel and the United States which have affected supply chains and transportation costs. The situation has created operational challenges for food businesses that depend heavily on regular fuel supply for cooking.

Many paying guest hostels and student mess facilities in Hyderabad have already simplified their food menus. Instead of preparing multiple dishes that require long cooking time they are now serving basic meals such as rice, sambar, dal and rasam which can be cooked quickly and with less fuel consumption.

Hostel operators say that if the shortage continues for another two or three days they may have no option but to suspend full kitchen operations and temporarily close some hostels until normal gas supply resumes.

Meanwhile several large hotels have increased prices for the limited items that remain on their menus. Due to rising transportation costs and supply disruptions prices of dosa, puri and vada have increased by at least Rs 15 while items like idli and upma have seen price increases of around Rs 10.

Food business owners say the adjustments are temporary measures aimed at managing the crisis until gas supply stabilizes. Customers in Hyderabad are now adjusting to smaller menus and higher prices as the food service sector navigates the ongoing shortage.
