The central government has unveiled major aviation expansion plans under the UDAN 2.0 scheme, promising improved connectivity and development opportunities for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu shared details of the initiative, highlighting its impact on regional growth.
As part of the plan, new airports are set to be developed in Adilabad in Telangana and Nagarjunasagar in Andhra Pradesh. The initiative focuses on upgrading existing airstrips into full scale airports, making air travel accessible to more regions.
The project is part of a broader national effort with an allocation of 28000 crore to enhance aviation infrastructure. This includes development of 100 airports and 200 heliports across the country, significantly strengthening regional connectivity.
In Adilabad, the minister clarified that the existing Air Force airstrip will remain under defense control, and a new civilian airport will be constructed on nearby land. This approach ensures both security and infrastructure expansion.
The scheme is expected to boost tourism and industrial activity in both states. Regions like Nagarjunasagar, known for their tourism potential, will benefit from improved accessibility.
The minister also mentioned that the Warangal Mamunur airport proposal is under review, with efforts underway to begin work soon. Additionally, the central government has encouraged the Telangana state government to identify suitable land for projects in Kothagudem and Basantnagar.
In Andhra Pradesh, progress on Bhogapuram International Airport and expansion of Vijayawada Gannavaram Airport is nearing completion. Both are expected to be operational by June next year, further strengthening the state’s aviation network.
Highlighting future prospects, the minister noted that aircraft manufacturing in India could soon become a reality, with global company Embraer showing interest in setting up production by 2028. This move is expected to support the Make in India initiative.
Experts believe that once these projects are completed, travel time between regions will reduce significantly, while economic activity and connectivity across Telugu states will see a major boost.
