In a landmark move aimed at strengthening worker protection, the Telangana Assembly has approved a new bill focused on the welfare of gig workers. The legislation introduces a structured system to provide social security and legal recognition to thousands working in the platform based economy.

A key feature of the bill is the creation of a dedicated welfare board that will oversee benefits and address the concerns of gig workers. Each registered worker will be assigned a unique ID, enabling better tracking of benefits and ensuring transparency across platforms.

The government has also proposed financial security measures, including pension schemes, insurance coverage, and maternity benefits. These steps are expected to provide much needed stability to gig workers who often lack traditional employment safeguards.

To fund these initiatives, a small levy of one to two percent will be collected, creating a welfare fund. Platform companies will also contribute through transaction based fees, while administrative expenses will be limited to maintain efficiency.

The bill places accountability on digital platform companies by requiring them to regularly submit operational data. Strict penalties have been outlined for non compliance, with fines increasing for repeated violations to ensure adherence to the rules.

Transparency is another major focus, as companies will be required to clearly inform workers about payments and deductions. The legislation also seeks to prevent discrimination in app based systems, promoting fair opportunities for all workers.

Labour Minister G Vivek Venkataswamy stated that the bill was developed after consultations with gig worker unions and stakeholders. Feedback from the public was also incorporated to strengthen the final framework.

The government believes this initiative will protect the rights and dignity of gig workers while offering long term financial security. With structured grievance systems and regular board meetings, the new policy aims to create a safer and more reliable working environment.
