The Telangana government is moving ahead with an ambitious plan to build an international standard fruit market at Koheda in Rangareddy district, aiming to strengthen agricultural trade and improve income opportunities for farmers. Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao confirmed that a detailed project report worth Rs 3087 crore has already been prepared for the initiative.
The proposed market is designed to function as a modern trading hub with advanced infrastructure and global level facilities. According to the minister, the project will not only streamline fruit marketing within the state but also create strong export channels for national and international markets.
Construction work is expected to begin soon, with the project planned across a large land parcel. Initially, 178.09 acres were allocated for the market in 2011. The current government has expanded the scope by approving an additional 239 acres, ensuring sufficient space for large scale operations and future growth.
The market will operate through two separate systems to improve efficiency. Wholesale trading will continue under the existing Gaddiannaram Market Committee, while a dedicated section will be developed exclusively for export oriented activities. Infrastructure support will also be created in coordination with industrial authorities to facilitate international trade.
Addressing political criticism, Tummala dismissed allegations regarding land sale as baseless. He assured that the government remains committed to protecting farmers’ interests and will not take any decision that harms them. He also pointed out that earlier administrations failed to develop the allocated land, delaying the project for years.
The initiative reflects the government’s broader vision under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to modernize agriculture and provide better market access to farmers. By integrating global standards and export focused facilities, the Koheda fruit market is expected to become a key center for agricultural commerce in Telangana.
