Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has proposed a new approach for allocating parliamentary seats, linking them to a state’s economic contribution rather than population alone.
The proposal, referred to as the GSDP based formula, aims to reward states that contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth. It challenges the existing system where seat allocation is primarily determined by population figures.
If implemented, this new formula could significantly increase Telangana’s representation in Parliament. Currently, the state has 17 Lok Sabha seats, but under the proposed model, it could gain 13 additional seats, taking the total to 30.
The idea is rooted in concerns that southern states, which have effectively controlled population growth, may lose political representation in future delimitation exercises if population remains the only criterion.
By considering economic performance, the proposal seeks to ensure that states contributing more to the national economy receive fair political recognition and influence at the national level.
Experts believe that such a shift could redefine political dynamics in India, giving economically strong states a greater voice in policymaking.
The Telangana government is strongly advocating this model, arguing that it would create a more balanced and fair system while also encouraging states to focus on economic development.
With this proposal, Telangana aims to strengthen its role in national politics and secure greater representation in line with its economic progress.
