In a significant move to protect farmers and curb plastic usage, the Telangana government has imposed a ban on the sale of plastic flowers across all government markets and Rythu Bazars.
The decision comes after repeated complaints from farmers who said that plastic flowers were affecting the demand for natural flowers. Many growers reported losses as buyers increasingly preferred cheaper plastic alternatives over fresh produce.
Responding to these concerns, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao directed officials to stop the sale of plastic flowers in regulated markets. Following this, the marketing department issued strict orders enforcing the ban across the state.
Officials have been instructed to ensure that only natural flowers and related products are sold in markets. Violators of the new rules will face penalties, and their licenses may also be cancelled if they continue selling plastic flowers.
The issue gained attention after farmers raised their concerns during recent agricultural events, stating that their livelihoods were being affected. The government acted quickly to address the problem and support the farming community.
This decision is also part of a broader effort by the state to reduce plastic usage and promote eco friendly alternatives. Authorities are encouraging people to use materials such as paper cloth and jute instead of plastic products.
In addition, steps are being taken to strengthen restrictions on single use plastic, especially in urban areas like Hyderabad. Legal measures are also being considered to make the plastic ban more effective.
Farmers across the state have welcomed the move, expressing relief that their concerns were heard. They believe the ban will help restore demand for natural flowers and improve their income in the coming seasons.
