- Telangana Beedi Workers receive wage increase
- New salary agreement benefits lakhs of workers
- Beedi workers income rises across Telangana
Around seven lakh beedi workers across Telangana are set to benefit after managements agreed to revise wages following discussions with labour unions in Hyderabad. The new agreement is expected to provide major financial relief to thousands of low income families dependent on the beedi industry.
According to the revised wage structure, workers will now receive an additional six rupees for every thousand beedis rolled. Earlier, workers were earning Rs 268.31 per thousand beedis, but with the latest revision, the amount has increased to Rs 275.23.
Union leaders said the increase would improve the living conditions of workers who have been demanding better wages for a long time. Officials confirmed that the revised salaries and benefits will remain in effect until April 30, 2028.
The beedi sector in Telangana largely depends on women workers, who make up nearly 98 percent of the workforce. Most of these workers belong to districts such as Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Adilabad, where beedi rolling remains a major source of household income.
Labour representatives stated that when bonus payments and paid leave benefits are included, the overall rise in earnings would reach nearly 15.33 percent. They described the agreement as one of the better outcomes achieved during the regular wage negotiations that are held once every two years.
Apart from beedi rollers, employees working in other departments will also receive higher salaries. Packers are expected to get an additional monthly increase of up to Rs 4,500, while workers in other categories such as clerks and battiwalas could see hikes of up to Rs 2,200.
The decision is likely to benefit nearly 14,000 additional staff members working in different sections of the industry across Telangana. Trade unions said the wage revision became possible only after continuous pressure and negotiations with management representatives.
Workers and union leaders expressed hope that the improved wages would bring some stability to struggling families facing rising household expenses and inflation.
