A unique public awareness initiative has been launched at Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda prison campus where people can now experience life inside a jail for an entire day under a specially designed programme called Feel The Jail.
The Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla officially inaugurated the new jail museum and interactive prison experience centre set up at the State Institute of Correctional Administration in Chanchalguda. Officials said the facility has been developed to educate the public about prison life and correctional systems.
The museum was shifted from Sangareddy after the earlier structure became damaged over time. Under the supervision of Prisons Department Director General Soumya Mishra, the new centre was redesigned with modern facilities and advanced exhibits. Authorities stated that it is now recognised as the fifth jail museum in the country.
Under the Feel The Jail programme, participants are required to pay a fee of Rs 500 to spend 24 hours inside the prison environment. Once registered, visitors are treated like inmates and provided with prison uniforms, steel plates, mugs and an identification number similar to regular prisoners.
Participants must strictly follow prison rules throughout their stay. Their routine includes waking up according to jail timings, eating food prepared inside the prison and carrying out assigned tasks during the day.
Officials clarified that anyone choosing to leave the programme before completing the full duration will have to pay a penalty of Rs 1000. The rule has been introduced to ensure participants fully understand the discipline and restrictions associated with prison life.
The museum also showcases old punishment methods, chains, handcuffs and historical prison equipment used during earlier periods. Audio visual sections explain how prison administration functions, including inmate interactions and visitor meetings.
According to prison department officials, the initiative is aimed mainly at creating awareness among youth and helping people understand how small mistakes can lead to serious consequences in life. The museum has been designed to combine prison history with modern correctional reforms under one roof.
