Congress leader Sonia Gandhi underwent routine medical examinations at a private hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday, following which she safely returned home, according to a clarification issued by the Congress party.
The statement came after reports surfaced claiming that the senior Congress leader had fallen ill and undergone a minor surgery. The party strongly denied those claims and stated that the hospital visit was only for a regular health checkup.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh released a brief statement confirming the update. He said Sonia Gandhi, who serves as the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, had completed her routine medical evaluation and returned home afterward.
The 79 year old leader has faced several health related issues in recent years. Earlier this year in March, she was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi after experiencing health complications. In January as well, she reportedly received treatment for respiratory issues linked to worsening air pollution conditions.
Over the past few years, Sonia Gandhi has visited hospitals multiple times for stomach related concerns and regular medical monitoring. However, party leaders clarified that the latest hospital visit in Gurugram was precautionary and part of her scheduled medical care.
Despite health challenges, Sonia Gandhi continues to remain an influential figure within the Congress party. Currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan, she has earlier been elected to the Lok Sabha five times and has also served twice as Congress president.
Senior party leaders say she continues to play an important role in key political and organizational decisions within the Congress party.
