In a significant move balancing development and conservation, the state government has initiated the rehabilitation of tribal families living in the Amrabad Tiger Reserve, marking a key step toward long-term ecological and social transformation.
As part of the first phase, 417 families from four tribal villages will be relocated. The process officially began on March 25, 2026, with the distribution of financial assistance to selected families. During a formal event, 14 tribal families received Rs 15 lakh each in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and other ministers.
Officials stated that the initiative is designed not only to improve the living standards of tribal communities but also to strengthen forest and wildlife conservation efforts. The government emphasized that the entire process is being carried out with the consent of the tribal families and is not a routine administrative decision but a major social and environmental reform.
The rehabilitation site has been identified near Bacharam in Nagarkurnool district. A total budget of Rs 62.55 crore has been allocated for the project, including Rs 24 crore for direct financial compensation and Rs 38.55 crore for housing infrastructure. Pilot works have already begun for families from Sarlapalli, Kudichintalabailu, Tatigundalapenta, and Kollampenta villages.
Under the rehabilitation plan, 160 families will receive Rs 15 lakh each as financial support, while 257 families will be provided with modern housing along with five acres of agricultural land at the resettlement site.
The government has also announced comprehensive facilities at the new location, including safe drinking water, electricity, healthcare services, and permanent housing. In addition, tribal children will have access to modern schools, anganwadi centers, and digital learning resources. Skill development programs and self-help groups will be introduced to strengthen economic independence.
Authorities highlighted that the compensation amount of Rs 15 lakh is among the highest offered in such initiatives across the country. The project is also expected to help restore nearly 1501 hectares of forest land, creating a better habitat for wildlife, including tigers, and supporting efforts to increase their population.
Local representatives stated that the rehabilitation colony at Bacharam is being developed as a model village with all essential facilities such as roads, schools, community halls, and farmer support centers, ensuring a sustainable and improved future for the relocated families.
