The Telangana government has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the Basara Gnana Saraswati temple into a major spiritual destination on the lines of Tirumala. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has approved a comprehensive master plan with an estimated cost of Rs 225 crore, with foundation work set to begin on April 6.
The temple, located on the banks of the Godavari river in Nirmal district, is one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in the state. The government aims to upgrade infrastructure while preserving the sanctity and traditional values of the temple.
During a review meeting, the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that all development works strictly follow agama shastra principles and respect the beliefs of devotees. He emphasized that the temple’s spiritual atmosphere should not be disturbed while modern facilities are introduced.
The master plan focuses on improving accessibility and managing the increasing number of pilgrims. Officials have been instructed to develop wider roads and streamline movement within the temple premises to handle large crowds efficiently.
In a move to promote eco friendly practices, the government plans to allow only electric vehicles in the temple surroundings. The Chief Minister also called for strict regulations to prevent political activities within temple premises, similar to the norms followed in Tirumala.
The development initiative is part of a broader strategy by the state government to enhance major temples across Telangana. Recently, similar large scale plans were announced for the Bhadrachalam temple.
For Bhadrachalam, the government has prepared a separate development project worth Rs 586 crore. The first phase alone involves an investment of Rs 351 crore, focusing on expanding temple infrastructure and improving facilities for devotees.
Key components of the Bhadrachalam plan include enhanced queue systems, modern amenities, spiritual landscaping and improved bathing ghats along the Godavari river. The government aims to complete the initial phase before the Godavari Pushkaralu in 2027.
Officials stated that both projects are designed keeping future requirements in mind, ensuring that the temples can accommodate increasing footfall for the next several decades.
The government believes that these initiatives will not only improve pilgrim experience but also strengthen the cultural and spiritual identity of Telangana.
