BJP Secures Karimnagar Mayor Seat as Lotus Blooms in Bandi Sanjay Stronghold
Defying the statewide Congress surge, the BJP emerged as the single largest party in Karimnagar Corporation, clinching the mayor post with crucial support in a politically significant urban battle.

- BJP wins Karimnagar mayor seat.
- Bandi Sanjay influence proves decisive.
- Congress surge halts in key city.
Karimnagar once again proved to be a stronghold for the Bharatiya Janata Party as the party captured the mayor’s post in the municipal corporation elections, standing firm amid a strong Congress wave across Telangana.
While the Congress recorded impressive gains statewide, Karimnagar charted a different political course. The BJP emerged as the single largest party, asserting its dominance in what is considered the political bastion of Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
The high stakes contest across 66 divisions saw the BJP secure 33 seats, falling just one short of an outright majority. Congress followed with 12 seats, BRS slipped to third place with nine, MIM won seven, and other parties shared the remaining five. The decline of BRS from its earlier dominant position stood out as a key takeaway from the results.
With the mayoral magic number set at 34, the BJP crossed the threshold through the ex officio vote of the Karimnagar MP, allowing the party to claim the mayor seat without seeking outside support. Party leaders described the outcome as a clear endorsement of BJP leadership and grassroots mobilisation.
Election observers noted that focused campaigning, sustained local outreach, and emphasis on development helped the BJP consolidate support even in traditionally competitive divisions. The reduced tally of rival parties also played a role in easing the BJP path to power.
The result reinforces Karimnagar’s reputation as a BJP fortress and marks a symbolic victory at a time when the party faced mixed fortunes elsewhere in the state.
