Both Telangana Rajya Sabha Seats Likely to Go to Congress
With assembly numbers strongly favoring Congress the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Telangana are expected to deliver both vacant seats to the ruling party while opposition faces steep arithmetic hurdles

- Congress holds a clear numerical advantage.
- Opposition lacks sufficient voting strength.
- Both Rajya Sabha seats are likely unopposed.
The Election Commission has announced the schedule for Rajya Sabha elections to fill two vacant seats from Telangana, setting the stage for a largely predictable outcome based on current Assembly strength. The notification will be issued on February 26, with polling scheduled for March 16.
The vacancies arise as the terms of sitting members come to an end, including senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi from the Congress and K R Suresh Reddy from the BRS. As parties prepare their strategies, numbers inside the Assembly appear to heavily tilt the contest in favour of the ruling side.
Going by the electoral math, each candidate requires around forty to forty one first preference votes to secure a Rajya Sabha seat. Congress currently enjoys the support of more than seventy five MLAs including allies and recent entrants, placing it close to the required strength to comfortably win both seats. Support from the Majlis further strengthens its position.
The opposition BRS is in a difficult spot with only twenty seven MLAs, a number insufficient to secure even one seat. The BJP with a smaller presence is also unlikely to influence the outcome, making the contest largely one sided.
Congress leadership is expected to allocate one seat to a national level leader and the other to a state level representative keeping political and social balance in mind.
