In a major push for rural development, the Centre has released 247.94 crore in untied grants to Telangana’s gram panchayats, aiming to accelerate infrastructure growth across villages.

The allocation comes under the Finance Commission recommendations as part of a larger package exceeding 1500 crore distributed among six states. Telangana’s share will directly benefit around 12600 gram panchayats, giving local bodies greater financial strength.

These funds are categorized as untied grants, allowing village authorities to prioritize projects based on local needs. Gram sabhas can decide on key works such as internal roads, drainage repairs, street lighting, and maintenance of burial grounds, ensuring development aligns with ground realities.

However, the Centre has imposed strict conditions on fund usage. The grants must be used only for development activities and cannot be diverted towards salaries or administrative expenses. Every rupee spent will be monitored, and panchayats are required to upload their development plans on official online portals for transparency.

The move follows earlier concerns over delays and misuse of funds, prompting tighter regulations and accountability measures. Officials believe this will ensure better implementation and prevent diversion of resources.

In this phase, Maharashtra received the highest allocation of around 800 crore, followed by Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Meghalaya, while Telangana secured nearly 247.94 crore to strengthen its rural economy.

With recently elected local bodies now in place after a long gap, village level governance in Telangana is expected to gain momentum. Leaders and local representatives have urged timely release and proper utilization of funds to complete pending works and improve living conditions.

Experts believe that direct transfer of funds to panchayats will strengthen grassroots democracy and bring visible changes in rural infrastructure, making villages more livable and sustainable.
