The Telangana government has taken a major step toward transforming the Musi River into a modern tourism and cultural destination with the preparation of the Gandhi Sarovar project DPR. The ambitious project is planned near Bapu Ghat in Hyderabad as part of the larger Musi River rejuvenation initiative.

Officials from the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited have completed the detailed project report which outlines several large scale infrastructure and tourism developments. The project is estimated to cost around 400 crore rupees.

One of the main highlights of the Gandhi Sarovar project is the construction of a massive statue of Mahatma Gandhi. The statue is planned to reach a height of about 150 meters making it one of the most prominent landmarks in the region.

The structure will include a multi level tower up to around 100 meters in height which will house a museum exhibition spaces meeting halls and offices dedicated to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi. The statue itself will be placed above the tower adding another 35 to 50 meters in height.

Another unique attraction proposed in the project is a giant wheel inspired by the London Eye design. This structure will resemble the spinning wheel associated with Gandhian philosophy and will add a symbolic and visual element to the riverfront development.

The government currently has around 60 acres of land at Bapu Ghat and about 34 acres will be used for the main Gandhi Sarovar project area. Authorities are also working on acquiring additional land nearby to expand the development.

The broader Musi River rejuvenation plan aims to improve water flow and beautify the surrounding areas along the river. Roads will be built on both sides of the river including a 100 foot road on one side and an 80 foot road on the other.

The project also includes cycling tracks pedestrian walkways landscaped parks and recreational spaces along the riverfront. Children parks hotels amphitheaters and event spaces are part of the proposed development.

In addition about fifteen bridges will be constructed from the Himayatsagar and Osmansagar reservoirs to the Gandhi Sarovar stretch. Small barrages will also be built at several points along the river.

Boating facilities will be introduced at Gandhi Sarovar to enhance tourism activities. Officials say the project is expected to turn the Musi riverfront into a vibrant public space combining cultural heritage environmental restoration and tourism development in Hyderabad.
