A heartbreaking incident in Hyderabad has left a family and neighbourhood in deep shock after a 12 year old boy ended his life at home. Police said the child was distressed after being scolded by his father for excessive mobile phone use and skipping school.
The incident occurred in the Banjara Hills area of Hyderabad. The boy identified as Mohammed Afan Khan was a Class 5 student studying in a private school. According to initial findings, he had been spending long hours on his phone and playing video games, which had become a concern for his family.
Family members told police that Afan’s mother passed away earlier and he was being raised by his father and stepmother. His father Irfan Khan, a wall painter by profession, had recently reprimanded him in an attempt to reduce his screen time and improve school attendance.
On February 24, when his father and stepmother left home to attend a relative’s funeral, the child was alone. Police said Afan, who appeared emotionally disturbed after the reprimand, took the extreme step by hanging himself using a saree tied to a ceiling fan.
Following a complaint from the father, Banjara Hills police registered a case and launched an investigation. The incident has triggered widespread concern over children’s mental health and the need for sensitive communication between parents and young children.
