- GHMC notices ignored before building seizure
Authorities in Hyderabad have sealed a building linked to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa after long pending property tax dues remained unpaid. The action was taken by GHMC officials following repeated notices that reportedly received no response.
The building, located in Yusufguda under GHMC limits, had accumulated property tax dues of approximately 83 lakh rupees. Officials stated that notices were issued earlier in February, asking for payment, but no settlement was made by those associated with the property.
With the deadline passing and no communication from the concerned parties, GHMC staff proceeded to seal the G plus 4 structure on Monday under the supervision of senior officials. The property had previously been used for commercial purposes, which is why it was taxed under the commercial category.
Interestingly, a request had been made earlier by Jayalalithaa’s relative to convert the building status from commercial to residential, claiming it had been used for living purposes since 2017. However, the pending dues remained unresolved despite such appeals.
Officials also highlighted that the government’s one time settlement scheme, which offers relief on interest payments, is nearing its deadline. Property owners have been urged to clear their dues through digital platforms as offline payments are no longer accepted.
The sealing of the Jayalalithaa building serves as a strict reminder of enforcement measures being taken by civic authorities in Hyderabad to recover pending property taxes and ensure compliance.
