Tense scenes unfolded in the Assembly as a debate over the Ippa Sara issue quickly turned into a political flashpoint, drawing sharp reactions from ministers and ruling party members.
The controversy began when BJP MLA Paidi Rakesh Reddy made remarks referencing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during discussions on the Ippa Sara scheme. His comments led to immediate outrage, with ministers and Congress legislators strongly objecting and demanding action.
As the situation escalated, the Speaker intervened and ordered that the controversial remarks be removed from the official records. The move came amid mounting pressure from members who accused the MLA of making disrespectful statements.
Ministers including Seethakka, Ponnam Prabhakar, and Sridhar Babu expressed strong displeasure, stating that invoking Indira Gandhi in such a manner was inappropriate. They argued that such remarks not only disrespected a former Prime Minister but also hurt public sentiment.
The issue gained further attention as several leaders pointed out that Indira Gandhi was a respected national figure and recalled past acknowledgments of her leadership. The ministers demanded an apology, calling the comments unnecessary and provocative.
Facing criticism, Rakesh Reddy later clarified his position. He stated that he holds great respect for Indira Gandhi and did not intend to insult her. According to him, his suggestion was only that her name should not be used for the Ippa Sara scheme.
He further explained that his comments were meant as a policy suggestion and not a personal remark. He reiterated that Indira Gandhi is not only a Congress leader but also a former Prime Minister of India, deserving respect across political lines.
The debate, which initially focused on the benefits and aspects of the Ippa Sara scheme, ultimately turned into a political confrontation, highlighting ongoing tensions between ruling and opposition parties in the Assembly.
