Khammam Devarapalli Greenfield Highway Set to Transform Travel With Smart Technology

The Khammam Devarapalli greenfield highway is nearing completion as India’s first access controlled corridor linking Telangana and Andhra Pradesh promising faster travel advanced safety systems and reduced distance between major cities.

  • Khammam Devarapalli highway nears completion.
  • Smart technology enhances road safety.
  • Travel time between states to reduce sharply.

A new chapter in road infrastructure is unfolding with the Khammam to Devarapalli greenfield highway emerging as one of the most advanced corridors in the region. Built as a four lane access controlled highway, the project is designed to seamlessly connect Telangana and Andhra Pradesh while cutting down travel time significantly.

Spanning 162 kilometres, the highway links NH 65 and NH 16 and is being developed at a cost of over 4450 crore rupees under the Bharatmala project. Construction has been divided into five packages, with three stretches in Telangana and two in Andhra Pradesh. Despite initial delays, key structures including the Munneru river bridge and railway over bridges are now in the final stages.

Once operational, the highway will reduce the Hyderabad to Visakhapatnam distance by around 56 kilometres and save up to four hours of travel time. The road is being built with a total width of 30 metres, dedicated lanes on either side and a wide central median. Entry and exit points have been limited to ensure smooth high speed movement and prevent animal intrusion.

Safety and technology are central to the project. High resolution CCTV cameras have been installed every two kilometres, offering 360 degree coverage and real time incident detection. These cameras can detect overspeeding wrong route driving sudden stoppages and other violations. Solar powered street lighting and variable message sign boards will provide traffic and weather updates without external power dependency.

An advanced traffic management system will monitor live traffic conditions through dedicated centres across all five packages. Emergency median openings have been provided at regular intervals, and rest bays are being developed near entry exit points for drivers and passengers.

Officials say the highway is expected to be inaugurated in May, with preparations underway for the launch by Narendra Modi. According to the National Highways Authority of India, this will be the first access controlled greenfield highway of its kind in both states and a model for future smart highways.
