A frightening midnight emergency at Hyderabad’s Mir Alam Tank turned into a story of courage after the HYDRA Disaster Response Force successfully rescued nine people stranded deep inside the lake. The incident unfolded near the Old City Zoo Park area, where workers were engaged in development-related activities.
The group, which included engineers and labourers, had gone into the tank earlier in the day for soil testing work related to a proposed bridge project. As per routine, they used a boat to reach the inner section of the lake. However, while returning after sunset, the boat’s engine suddenly failed, leaving them helpless in the middle of the water.
Darkness quickly set in, adding to their fear. Attempts to manually push the boat failed as thick water weeds blocked movement. Panic grew with the constant fear of crocodiles known to inhabit the tank and the complete inability to reach the shore.
With no other option, the stranded workers contacted Dial 100. The alert was immediately passed to the HYDRA DRF control room, triggering an emergency response. DRF officials established contact with those trapped and reassured them that help was on the way.
Senior officers including SFO Jameel and rescue team incharge Swamy spoke continuously with the group over the phone, calming them and asking them to stay alert. Despite poor visibility and heavy vegetation, the rescue team navigated through the lake using torchlights and guidance from mobile phone signals.
Reaching the spot under extremely risky conditions, the DRF team first evacuated four people to safety. They then returned into the darkness once again, assuring the remaining workers that no one would be left behind. In the second trip, the remaining five were safely brought ashore.
The entire operation took several tense moments, but it ended without any loss of life. The rescued workers, visibly shaken, thanked the HYDRA team for their bravery and constant communication during the ordeal. They said the reassurance over phone calls gave them hope while they were trapped in fear.
Local residents and officials praised the DRF personnel for their fearless approach and commitment, calling the operation a fine example of emergency preparedness. The midnight rescue at Mir Alam Tank once again highlighted the crucial role played by HYDRA DRF in protecting lives during critical situations.
