Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has raised serious concerns over declining learning standards among students, calling for urgent reforms to improve the quality of education across the state. Speaking during the inauguration of a private school in Hyderabad, he stressed that education must go beyond expansion and focus on outcomes.

Citing findings from a recent survey, the Chief Minister revealed a worrying trend in student learning levels. According to the data, only a small percentage of Class 6 students are able to read textbooks meant for their grade, while the majority are still at a much lower reading level. He said this gap reflects the need for immediate intervention in foundational learning.

To address this issue, the government is planning to introduce pre primary education including nursery LKG and UKG in government schools from the next academic year. The move aims to ensure that children begin their education journey within the public system instead of shifting to private institutions at an early stage.

Revanth Reddy also pointed out inefficiencies within the system, noting that in some government schools the number of teachers exceeds the number of students. He said such imbalances must be corrected to ensure better utilization of resources and improved outcomes.

Highlighting the government’s financial commitment, he said Telangana is spending a significant portion of its budget on education, with substantial investment allocated per student. However, he emphasized that funding alone is not enough without a strong focus on quality and accountability.

The Chief Minister said the state is also investing in future ready institutions such as Young India Integrated Residential Schools and the Young India Skills University. These initiatives aim to combine academic learning with skill development to prepare students for real world challenges.

He added that while educational institutions have expanded rapidly over the years, the focus must now shift towards delivering meaningful and practical education. Strengthening government schools, improving early learning and integrating skill based training are key priorities for the state.

Revanth Reddy reiterated that quality education is essential for long term development and called for a collective effort to build a stronger and more effective education system in Telangana.
