A tragic incident in Siddipet district has once again drawn attention to the growing distress among farmers, after a cultivator died by suicide following severe crop loss caused by lack of irrigation water.
The farmer, who depended entirely on agriculture for his livelihood, had cultivated paddy on his land with borrowed money, hoping for a stable yield. However, as the crop began to grow, groundwater levels dropped sharply, leaving the fields without adequate water supply.
In an attempt to save the crop, he invested further by drilling a borewell, but it failed to yield water. With the crop drying up before his eyes and mounting debts becoming unmanageable, the farmer reportedly fell into deep distress.
Unable to cope with the financial burden and uncertainty, he ended his life near his agricultural field. The incident has left family members and villagers in shock, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by farmers in the region.
Locals say such situations are becoming increasingly common, as unpredictable water availability and rising costs continue to affect farming communities. The loss has also brought attention to the vulnerable condition of the farmer’s family.
The deceased is survived by two young daughters, and villagers have appealed to the government to provide immediate support and assistance to the bereaved family.
The incident has once again raised urgent questions about irrigation facilities, groundwater management, and financial protection for farmers facing crop failures.
