Hyderabad: The Telangana government is set to take full control of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project, marking a major shift from the existing public private partnership model. The state plans to acquire the entire stake from L and T, including associated debt, at an estimated cost of Rs 15000 crore.
The decision is part of a broader strategy to strengthen urban transport infrastructure and speed up future expansion works. Officials believe that bringing the metro under government control will help streamline operations and improve efficiency.
A cabinet sub committee has been entrusted with overseeing the takeover process. It will finalize key aspects including the transaction closure date and submit recommendations to the cabinet for approval in the upcoming meeting.
The funding for the acquisition is expected to be arranged through the Indian Railway Finance Corporation, which will support the state in completing the deal. Discussions are also ongoing regarding the official date to be considered for the transaction closure, with L and T suggesting earlier reference points.
Alongside the takeover, the government is actively planning the expansion of the metro network. Proposals have already been sent to the central government for Phase two projects, which include large scale corridor additions covering more than 160 kilometers.
Officials said that acquiring the existing metro operations will make it easier to push forward with expansion plans without delays. The move is also expected to align with national metro rail policies and help secure approvals for future phases.
With this decision, the Telangana government aims to enhance connectivity in Hyderabad while ensuring better management of one of the city most important public transport systems.
