Telangana Hands Anganwadi Monitoring Powers to Sarpanches
Telangana government has assigned anganwadi centre monitoring to sarpanches by forming village committees to improve nutrition quality stop irregularities and ensure children pregnant women receive proper food support.

- Sarpanches given authority to monitor anganwadi centres
- Village committees to check nutrition quality and distribution
- Focus on children and pregnant women nutrition delivery
The Telangana Government has given new responsibilities to village sarpanches by placing anganwadi centre monitoring directly under their supervision across the state.
According to official orders sarpanches will now oversee the functioning of anganwadi centres with the aim of preventing irregularities and strengthening delivery of nutrition to children and pregnant women.
The move comes after the government observed lapses in monitoring during the past two years when elected local bodies were not in place. Officials noted that in several villages nutritional supplies were diverted or poorly managed.
To address this each gram panchayat will form a special committee headed by the sarpanch as chairperson. The committee will have eleven members to ensure wider participation and accountability.
An anganwadi teacher will act as convener while members will include an ANM, a school science teacher, a retired employee, and mothers of young children. This structure is expected to bring community level oversight.
The committee will review the quality and distribution of rice, pulses, eggs, milk and balamruth supplied to anganwadi centres every month. Meals provided to pregnant women and lactating mothers under the Arogyalakshmi scheme will also be checked.
Officials said the primary objective is to ensure that nutrition worth lakhs of rupees reaches beneficiaries without leakages and that anganwadi services function effectively at the village level.
