The Telangana government has taken a strong step toward maintaining public harmony by introducing a hate speech bill in the Assembly. The proposed legislation aims to address the growing concern over inflammatory remarks and divisive content both in public spaces and online platforms.
After receiving cabinet approval earlier, the bill has now been placed before the Assembly and referred to a select committee for further review. The move reflects the government’s intent to create a structured legal framework to deal with hate driven expressions that threaten social peace.
The bill outlines strict punishments for individuals found guilty of promoting hatred based on religion caste language gender or place of residence. First time offenders could face imprisonment of up to seven years along with a monetary penalty. Repeat violations may attract harsher punishment extending up to ten years in prison with increased fines.
One of the key highlights of the legislation is its wide scope. It not only targets speeches but also includes printed content electronic communication and social media posts. Authorities will have the power to direct service providers to remove objectionable content immediately if it is found to incite hatred or violence.
Officials noted that the rise of provocative content on platforms like social media has made it necessary to bring such communications under legal scrutiny. The bill also makes offences under this law non bailable indicating the seriousness with which violations will be treated.
Public gatherings and community events will also come under watch, as any speech or message that could disturb communal harmony may lead to strict action under the proposed law.
With this initiative, the government aims to strike a balance between freedom of expression and the need to prevent hate driven narratives that can disrupt peace and unity in society.
