In a major step toward improving road safety, the Government of Telangana has launched Project Sanjeevani, a first of its kind integrated trauma care and highway rescue protocol in the country. The initiative will be piloted along a 251 kilometer stretch of National Highway 44 connecting Hyderabad and Adilabad.

The project focuses on strengthening emergency response systems on one of the most accident prone highway corridors in India. It is being implemented in partnership with SaveLIFE Foundation, along with the National Highways Authority of India, and supported by Vertis Foundation.

Launched during the Arrive Alive Road Safety Week held from April 13 to 17, the initiative is part of Telangana’s broader 99 day action plan aimed at improving road safety and reducing fatalities. Officials believe the model can later be expanded across other highways in the state and nationwide.

The program introduces a structured and coordinated response system for accidents, ensuring that victims receive timely medical attention. Authorities emphasized that quick and efficient post crash care can significantly improve survival rates on highways.

Senior officials highlighted that infrastructure alone cannot guarantee safety unless proper systems are consistently followed. Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary, noted that even well designed roads can turn into accident hotspots if safety protocols are not effectively implemented in daily operations.

Transport Commissioner K Ilambarithi stressed the importance of training ambulance personnel and strengthening enforcement mechanisms. He pointed out that faster response times, better highway patrolling, and improved coordination between agencies are critical to saving lives.

Efforts are also being made to address accident prone locations and improve driver awareness through education initiatives. By combining technology, training, and coordination, Project Sanjeevani aims to transform how emergencies are handled on highways.

With its pilot on NH44, Telangana is setting a precedent for a more responsive and efficient trauma care system, offering a potential blueprint for the rest of the country to follow.
