The controversial phone tapping case that has shaken Telangana politics over the past few days has now entered a critical phase. With the investigation nearing completion the Special Investigation Team is preparing to file a charge sheet that is expected to send strong ripples across the political landscape.
Sources familiar with the probe say the alleged illegal surveillance took place during the previous BRS government. Investigators claim to have gathered substantial material pointing to the involvement of senior political figures including former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and BRS working president K T Rama Rao along with former minister Harish Rao. Several other prominent names are also likely to feature in the list of accused.
A key turning point in the investigation has been a senior IAS officer agreeing to turn approver. According to the SIT this official revealed that information obtained through phone tapping was allegedly used for land settlements and financial transactions. Investigators say this testimony could prove crucial in strengthening the case against the main accused.
The SIT believes the surveillance was carried out under the official pretext of tracking Maoist activity but was allegedly extended to political rivals and even leaders within the ruling party. Officials also suspect that the case goes beyond surveillance and involves a significant financial angle.
At a recent review meeting the SIT chief discussed final preparations before filing the charge sheet. The team is reportedly considering adding more accused including individuals who allegedly benefited from the tapped data or helped destroy digital evidence. Arrests are expected once the charge sheet is filed.
Investigators are also examining whether the alleged tapping had any link to election time strategies intimidation of business persons and political funding. By turning members of the review committee into witnesses the SIT aims to firmly establish the case in court.
