Vehicle owners in Telangana can now access most transport services online as the government officially rolled out the Vahan Portal, marking a major shift from traditional RTA office based processes.

The portal was launched on March 23 by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, bringing Telangana into the national vehicle database system. This integration is expected to streamline services and reduce workload at Regional Transport Authority offices across the state.

Until now, vehicle related tasks such as registration, ownership transfer, corrections and name changes required multiple visits to RTA offices. Many people also depended on agents, often paying extra charges. With the new system in place, these services can now be handled digitally from anywhere.

In the initial phase, the focus will be on online registration of new vehicles. Authorities have confirmed that additional services will be introduced gradually. To ensure smooth implementation, RTA officials, staff and automobile dealers have already received training on the new system.

One of the major advantages of the Vahan Portal is its ability to handle vehicle transfers seamlessly, including inter state transfers. Officials say users will no longer need separate approvals or NOC for such processes, as everything will be managed automatically through the platform.

The portal is expected to offer up to 52 different services once fully operational. Apart from registrations and transfers, it will also help track vehicles in cases of theft or accidents, improving safety and monitoring.

In another relief for vehicle owners, the government has removed the two percent life tax on second vehicles from March 23. This decision is likely to benefit both existing owners and those planning to purchase new vehicles.

With digital access expanding, the Vahan Portal is set to transform how transport services are delivered, making the process faster, more transparent and convenient for citizens.
