The Telangana government is preparing a major initiative to transform thousands of conventional autorickshaws into electric vehicles as part of its strategy to reduce air pollution and promote green transportation. The proposal focuses on converting around one lakh twenty six thousand autos operating within the core urban region inside the Outer Ring Road.
Officials from the transport department have begun working on a special retrofit policy that will allow petrol diesel and gas powered autos to be converted into electric vehicles using electric kits. The initiative is being taken under the direction of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy as the state pushes toward cleaner mobility and reduced carbon emissions.
According to senior officials a high level meeting involving representatives from ten government departments will be held on the sixteenth of this month at the Secretariat to finalise the policy framework. Departments including finance municipal administration energy planning industries and welfare departments have been invited to participate in the discussion.
The government intends to provide full financial assistance to auto owners for installing electric kits so that drivers do not face additional financial burden. Authorities believe the move will encourage large scale adoption of electric mobility among autorickshaw operators.
During a recent review meeting of the roads and transport departments the Chief Minister directed officials to prepare a plan that ensures one hundred percent financial support for auto conversion. The government has also decided to allocate two hundred crore rupees in the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven state budget to support the program.
Officials estimate that installing an electric kit will cost between one lakh twenty thousand and two lakh rupees depending on the battery system used. Autos equipped with a swappable battery system are expected to cost around one lakh twenty thousand while vehicles with a fixed battery system may cost close to two lakh rupees.
The transport department believes the shift to electric autos will significantly reduce air pollution and noise pollution caused by conventional fuel vehicles in busy urban areas. Lower operating and maintenance costs are also expected to benefit auto drivers in the long run.
The electric auto conversion program is part of a broader effort by the Telangana government to promote environmentally friendly transport solutions. Authorities have already announced plans to operate only electric buses within the Outer Ring Road region under the state transport network.
If implemented successfully the initiative could transform the urban transport landscape in Hyderabad by promoting sustainable mobility while also supporting auto drivers through government backed financial assistance.
