- Telangana government introduces half day schedule for schools and Anganwadi centres.
- Decision taken to protect children from rising summer heat in Telangana.
- Anganwadi centres to function half day until April 23.
With summer temperatures rising rapidly across the Telugu states, the Telangana government has announced an important decision aimed at safeguarding children from the intense heat. Authorities have introduced a half day schedule for schools and, for the first time in the state’s history, the same system will also apply to Anganwadi centres.
The decision comes as daytime temperatures continue to climb, making it difficult for students and young children to remain in classrooms for extended hours. Heat and humidity have already begun affecting daily life across the region, prompting the government to take precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of children.
As part of the new arrangement, Anganwadi centres will operate from 8.00 am to 12.30 pm. The revised schedule will remain in force until April 23. Officials said this step was taken especially to protect infants and young children who attend Anganwadi centres and are more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.
Until now, Anganwadi centres in Telangana did not follow a separate summer schedule or half day system. This marks the first time the government has introduced such a measure specifically for these centres.
Authorities clarified that even after the summer holidays are announced, nutrition services will continue without interruption. Food supplies provided to children and pregnant women will remain unchanged. The government stated that nutritional support will be distributed through the take home ration system during the holiday period as well.
Meanwhile, the central government has also recently approved the upgradation of more than 5,000 Anganwadi centres in Telangana under the Saksham Anganwadi initiative. Union Minister Kishan Reddy announced that around Rs 30 crore has been allocated for the project.
Under this initiative, upgraded centres will be equipped with improved infrastructure including water filters, LED screens, nutrition support facilities and early childhood learning materials. The programme is being implemented through the Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0 schemes under the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Across the country, the central government is working to upgrade nearly two lakh Anganwadi centres functioning in government buildings as part of the same initiative.
In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, the government has already implemented half day schools for both government and private institutions starting March 16 due to the rising heat. However, a similar half day schedule for Anganwadi centres has not yet been announced in the state. Schools in Andhra Pradesh will operate only until noon, and an official announcement regarding summer holidays is expected soon.
