In a major step towards improving student nutrition the Telangana government has decided to introduce milk supply for students studying in government schools and junior colleges across the state. The initiative will cover students from Class 1 to Intermediate starting from the upcoming academic year beginning in June.

To implement this program the government has placed an order worth Rs 120 crore with Vijaya Dairy which will handle the supply of milk to educational institutions. Officials confirmed that the milk will be distributed along with the existing breakfast program already being provided in government schools.

This decision comes as part of broader reforms being introduced in the education sector under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy who has been closely monitoring the department. Since assuming office the government has been focusing on strengthening public education and introducing welfare measures aimed at student health and learning outcomes.

According to guidelines from the National Institute of Nutrition students require around 150 to 200 milliliters of milk daily. Vijaya Dairy officials stated that they are prepared to supply milk in tetra pack formats ensuring hygiene and easy distribution across schools and colleges.

The responsibility of supplying milk has been officially assigned to Vijaya Dairy following directions from the Chief Minister. The education department had sought proposals from the dairy and has now issued formal orders to begin supply from June aligning with the new academic session.

Currently Vijaya Dairy is already supplying milk to pregnant women and lactating mothers through Anganwadi centers in the state. Each beneficiary receives 200 milliliters of milk in tetra packs. In addition the dairy has recently started providing 100 milliliters of milk to children aged between three and five years in select Anganwadi centers in Mulugu district.

With the success of this pilot initiative the government is now planning to expand milk distribution to all Anganwadi centers across tribal regions and eventually throughout the state. Officials believe that extending this model to school students will significantly improve nutrition levels and support better growth and academic performance.

The move is expected to benefit lakhs of students across Telangana ensuring they receive essential nutrition daily along with their education.
