The Election Commission of India has postponed the much awaited voter list revision process in Telangana, which was initially scheduled to begin in April. The exercise will now commence in June, considering the ongoing assembly elections in several states and the upcoming national census.
Officials said the Special Integrated Revision is a large scale and periodic exercise aimed at ensuring accuracy in electoral rolls. This revision, conducted once in about 25 years, was last carried out in 2002 in the undivided Andhra Pradesh, making the current update particularly significant for Telangana.
Despite the delay, groundwork in the state is progressing steadily. Mapping activities, which form a crucial part of the revision process, are already nearing completion with about 80 percent of the work done. In rural areas, the mapping has reportedly reached full completion.
As part of the process, Booth Level Officers will visit households to verify voter details and update records. During preliminary checks, officials have identified nearly two lakh duplicate entries where individuals were registered in more than one location. Additionally, around 2.5 lakh voter records are currently under scrutiny.
The Election Commission has also outlined clear guidelines regarding acceptable identification documents for new registrations and corrections. A total of eleven types of identity proofs are being accepted, including passports, government issued identity cards, bank documents, caste certificates, and land allocation papers.
Specific rules have been introduced based on the year of birth. Individuals born before 1987 are required to provide parental details, while those born between 1987 and 2004 must submit birth certificates as part of the verification process.
The primary objective of this comprehensive revision is to remove duplicate entries, delete names of deceased or migrated individuals, and ensure that the voter list is accurate and transparent ahead of future elections.
