A quiet transformation is unfolding across Telangana as thousands of women return to classrooms through the Ammaku Aksharamala program, an initiative aimed at improving literacy and empowering women.
The program focuses primarily on members of self help groups, offering a second chance at education to women who could not complete their studies earlier due to family responsibilities. From middle aged participants to elderly learners, the initiative has created a supportive environment for women to pick up books once again.
Classes are conducted at the village level, making it convenient for women to attend without disrupting their daily routines. Each village identifies groups of non literate women, who are then guided by trained volunteers through simple and practical teaching methods.
The scale of participation has been remarkable. Over seven lakh women enrolled in the program, and more than six lakh appeared for a recent literacy examination conducted across the state. Successful candidates will now have the opportunity to progress further and even appear for Class ten examinations.
The program follows a structured sixteen week training model, where participants are provided with free learning materials such as notebooks and basic tools. Teaching techniques are designed to be easy to understand, using familiar concepts, symbols, and visuals to make learning accessible.
Officials have ensured proper training for volunteers and facilitators, working in coordination with the state’s adult education department. This has helped maintain consistency and quality in the teaching process across regions.
Leaders have emphasized that literacy is a powerful tool for women’s empowerment, enabling them to make informed decisions and improve their quality of life. The program reflects a broader effort to ensure that no woman is left behind due to lack of education.
With strong participation and encouraging outcomes, the Ammaku Aksharamala program is emerging as a key initiative in reshaping lives and strengthening communities across Telangana.
