Telangana is set to begin a key phase of Census 2027 with the launch of self enumeration, a digital process that allows citizens to submit household details online in just about 20 minutes. This marks a significant shift in how census data is collected, placing greater participation responsibility on residents.

The self enumeration window will open on April 26 and continue until May 10, giving households a limited period to complete the process. During this phase, individuals will answer around 33 questions mainly related to housing conditions and available assets rather than personal demographic details.

Officials clarified that sensitive data such as caste and religion will not be collected at this stage. Instead, only broad categories like SC ST and Others will be recorded. Detailed socio economic and demographic information will be gathered later during the population enumeration phase scheduled for 2027.

Following the online submission period, census staff will conduct door to door visits from May 11 to June 9 to verify the data provided by households. This hybrid approach is designed to reduce errors and speed up the overall data collection process.

According to the Union Home Ministry, the Census in Telangana will be carried out in two phases. The first phase focuses on house listing and housing census, while the second phase, planned for February 2027, will involve full population enumeration.

Director of Census Operations in Telangana Bharathi Hollikeri reviewed the preparedness of officials and emphasized the importance of smooth implementation. Authorities are also encouraging urban residents to actively use the digital option to simplify the process.

Officials have advised citizens to use a mobile number that will remain active throughout the census period, as it will be linked to their self enumeration ID. Residents, especially those in apartments or rented homes, are also asked to keep accurate address details ready to ensure proper mapping.

While self enumeration remains optional, it is expected to reduce the workload during physical verification and improve accuracy. The initiative reflects the government’s push towards digital governance while maintaining the reliability of traditional verification methods.
