In a decisive move aimed at protecting farmers, the Telangana Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution calling for an immediate ban on Paraquat Dichloride, a widely used but highly toxic pesticide.

The decision comes amid growing concern over the chemical’s deadly impact. According to officials, thousands of farmers and agricultural workers are affected every year, with many fatalities linked to accidental consumption or exposure. Experts warn that the pesticide has no effective antidote, and its fatality rate remains extremely high.

The issue gained urgency after public outcry intensified, especially following claims by actor Rahul Ramakrishna that his brother died due to Paraquat poisoning. The incident sparked widespread debate and brought attention to the dangers associated with the chemical.

Health risks are not limited to ingestion. Farmers spraying the pesticide without proper protective gear are reportedly facing respiratory problems and skin diseases, further highlighting the need for immediate intervention.

Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao emphasized that Paraquat Dichloride poses a serious threat to human life and must be regulated strictly. The Assembly has urged the central government to impose a complete ban on its production, sale, transport, and storage.

Several countries have already prohibited the chemical, and some Indian states have implemented temporary restrictions. Telangana is now pushing for stronger nationwide action while also planning strict enforcement within the state, including monitoring online availability and penalizing violations.

The move also aligns with the government’s broader push towards safer and sustainable farming practices, encouraging a shift away from hazardous chemicals to protect both farmers and the environment.
