A political confrontation unfolded in Hyderabad after the Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party claimed that its state chief, N Ramchander Rao, was placed under house arrest ahead of a planned protest over the women reservation bill issue.
The protest was scheduled near the residence of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, where BJP leaders intended to demonstrate against what they described as the Congress party’s role in the bill’s defeat in Parliament. According to party representatives, police action was taken to prevent the gathering, with visuals of the alleged restrictions shared online.
Despite the limitations imposed, Rao stated that the party would not step back from its campaign. He criticized the Congress, calling the development a setback for women’s representation and describing the situation as deeply disappointing.
The controversy comes in the wake of the Constitution Amendment Bill related to women reservation failing to secure the required support in Parliament. While a significant number of members backed the proposal, it fell short of the two thirds majority needed for passage.
Rao further urged women across Telangana to raise their voice against what he termed injustice, calling for wider public participation in protests. The BJP maintains that it will continue its outreach and agitation on the issue across the state.
The incident has added to the ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress in Telangana, with both sides likely to intensify their positions in the coming days.
