A Telangana intermediate student has brought attention to gender bias in the education system by writing directly to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, questioning a controversial exam question that she believes reflects outdated stereotypes.

Mahima Keerthana, a second year student from a government junior college in Kachiguda and a national level rifle shooter, expressed her concern after encountering a question in the recent intermediate English examination. The question asked students to write a dialogue between a mother and daughter about cooking, while another option focused on a father and son discussing future plans.

She questioned why cooking was associated only with girls while future planning was linked to boys, asking whether such distinctions still have a place in modern society. Through her letter, she urged authorities to rethink such content and ensure that education promotes equality rather than reinforcing stereotypes.

Mahima highlighted that both her parents share responsibilities at home, including cooking, and said she herself enjoys cooking. She emphasized that education should reflect real life values where men and women are treated equally in all aspects.

In her email to the Chief Minister, she also requested changes in the curriculum to remove gender biased questions and lessons. She said such content can negatively influence young minds and contradict the idea of equality taught in schools.

Apart from raising this issue, Mahima mentioned her achievements, including being a state level SGFI champion in 2023. She also shared that she has secured admission in NALSAR and aims to build her future as a lawyer alongside her sporting career.

She expressed disappointment that such questions appeared in an important examination and hoped that the government would take steps to revise the syllabus and prevent similar issues in the future.

Her letter has now sparked discussion on the need for gender sensitive education and the importance of aligning academic content with present day values.
