Telangana is preparing to bring electric vehicle infrastructure closer to villages as the government plans to establish EV charging stations across rural areas. The initiative is aimed at meeting the growing demand for electric vehicles and making charging facilities more accessible for users outside cities.

The project will be implemented through Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies, commonly known as PACS. During the first phase, authorities have selected 35 locations spread across eight combined districts, with plans to begin operations as early as next month.

The rapid rise in electric vehicle purchases in rural regions has created a need for stronger charging infrastructure. According to available figures, more than 12041 electric vehicles were purchased in Telangana rural areas during the last two years. Officials believe the new charging stations will help solve the difficulties faced by vehicle owners who often struggle to find charging points.

Many users in villages currently depend on home charging facilities, and unexpected battery shortages during travel have become a common concern. The proposed charging network is expected to provide a reliable solution while reducing inconvenience for daily users.

Each charging station is expected to cost around Rs 20 lakh. Under the PM E Drive scheme, the central government is expected to provide a subsidy of Rs 13 lakh, while the remaining Rs 7 lakh will be funded by the cooperative societies themselves.

Officials also see the project as an opportunity to create an additional source of income for cooperative societies. Experts estimate that the investment amount could be recovered within three to four years through operations and service charges.

The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation is expected to serve as the technical partner for the project. Authorities also plan to expand charging capacity in future depending on vehicle demand and usage patterns in specific regions.

With nearly 908 active cooperative societies operating across the state, the government aims to gradually extend EV charging facilities to more rural areas in the coming years.
