Commuters travelling in Telangana will soon notice relief in crowded buses as TGSRTC prepares to roll out 200 new buses across the state. The expansion is expected to improve passenger comfort while supporting women self help groups financially.

The new buses are being arranged under the Indira Mahila Shakti initiative, where women groups are purchasing vehicles with their own funds and leasing them to TGSRTC. This model not only increases the public transport fleet but also creates a steady income stream for thousands of women.

Officials said body building for the 200 buses has already been completed and the vehicles will be introduced after final government approval. Another 248 buses are likely to be ready by the end of March, taking the total addition to a significant level in the coming months.

The decision comes at a time when passenger rush has increased sharply, especially after the implementation of free bus travel for women under the Mahalakshmi scheme. Many buses are running at full capacity, leaving little space during peak hours. Authorities believe adding more buses is the only practical way to ease congestion.

Earlier, TGSRTC had hired 142 buses from women self help groups, and those services have been operating successfully in districts such as Warangal, Karimnagar and Mahabubnagar. Encouraged by the positive response, the corporation is now scaling up the partnership.

The long term target is ambitious. Officials aim to bring nearly 600 buses into the TGSRTC fleet through women groups in phases. So far, over 150 buses are already in service, with 200 more set to join shortly. The remaining buses will be inducted gradually.

Instead of purchasing a large number of buses at once, which would require heavy budget allocation, TGSRTC is opting for the lease model. By involving women groups, the state is combining public transport expansion with women economic empowerment.

For daily passengers, the change means shorter waiting times and better travel experience. For women groups, it represents a new opportunity to step into the transport sector and build sustainable income.
