Hyderabad commuters may soon experience a new way of urban travel as the city prepares to roll out Pod Taxis to strengthen metro connectivity. The proposed system aims to solve last mile travel challenges by directly linking metro stations to nearby business hubs and residential clusters.

The project will be implemented under the Personal Rapid Transit model with automated driverless pods operating on elevated tracks. These compact vehicles are designed to carry six to eight passengers at a speed of up to forty kilometres per hour, ensuring quick and smooth transit.

Authorities plan to introduce the service initially in high traffic corridors including Raidurg to Hitec City, Raidurg to Kukatpally, Financial District, Knowledge City and surrounding Secretariat areas in Hyderabad. These routes were chosen due to heavy metro footfall and dense commercial activity.

At present, nearly five lakh passengers use the metro network daily. While metro trains help commuters cover long distances quickly, reaching final destinations often involves waiting for autos or buses and navigating through congested roads. The Pod Taxi system is expected to eliminate this inconvenience by offering seamless transfers from station platforms to designated drop points.

The initiative is being explored through a public private partnership model under a design build finance operate transfer framework. A consultant will be appointed to conduct technical and financial feasibility studies.

Powered by electricity or batteries, Pod Taxis are also being positioned as an eco friendly solution that reduces pollution and road congestion. If implemented as planned, the system could handle up to ten thousand passengers per hour, significantly improving urban mobility in the city.
