In a significant step towards elderly welfare, the Telangana government has introduced day care centres aimed at improving the quality of life for senior citizens. These centres, launched under the Pranam initiative, are designed to address loneliness and provide a supportive environment for elderly individuals.
The initiative, inaugurated by Revanth Reddy, is being implemented across 37 locations in the state. These centres function as multi service hubs where elderly citizens can spend their day in a safe and engaging atmosphere while receiving essential care and companionship.
With changing family structures and children often moving to cities or abroad, many elderly people are left to live alone. Recognizing this growing concern, the government has taken steps to ensure that senior citizens do not feel isolated during the later stages of their lives.
Each centre operates from morning to evening, offering facilities such as free snacks, comfortable seating and a friendly environment. Staff including supervisors, cooks and attendants are appointed to take care of daily needs, ensuring that visitors feel welcomed and supported.
Beyond basic care, the centres provide a range of activities to keep the elderly mentally and physically active. Libraries stocked with spiritual and literary books, indoor games like chess and carrom and access to television and internet are part of the daily routine.
Healthcare is another key focus area. These centres are connected with geriatric clinics in government hospitals, enabling regular health checkups and access to physiotherapy services. Group activities such as meditation sessions also help in reducing stress and promoting mental peace among participants.
In districts like Adilabad, where one such centre has been operational since January, dozens of elderly citizens visit daily, finding both comfort and companionship. The initiative is not only improving social interaction but also restoring a sense of purpose and joy among participants.
Officials have encouraged the public to inform elderly individuals in their neighborhoods about these facilities, ensuring that more people benefit from the scheme. The centres remain open on all working days, excluding Sundays and government holidays, continuing to serve as a vital support system for the elderly across Telangana.
